In honor of the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series earlier this month after a long 108-year wait, we’ve rounded up our five all-time favorite Chicago Cubs!
5. Billy Williams
“Sweet-Swinging Billy Williams” was the 1961 NL Rookie of the Year, and a NL and Cubs All-Star for six seasons. He set a National League record for consecutive games played with 1,117 in 1962–71, and was selected as a member of the Cubs All-Century Team in 1999. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Famein 1987.
4. Ron Santo
Ron Santo played 14 seasons with the Cubs before being traded to the White Sox for his final season. He hit 337 home runs and batted in 1,331 for the Cubs, and played third base nearly every day. He served as the team’s color commentator on radio from 1990 until his death in 2010, earning him a whole new generation of fans. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012.
3. Ryne Sandberg
Ryne Sandberg played with the Cubs for 15 great seasons, where he hit 282 home runs and batted in 1,061 runs. He was put on the map in a June 1984 game when he hit two game-tying home runs off St. Louis Cardinals’ closer Bruce Sutter, leading them to a win. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.
2. Fergie Jenkins
Fergie Jenkins played with the Cubs for a majority of his career, from 1966–1973. He was a three-time All-Star as a Cub and won the Cy Young Award in 1971. He played basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters during the off-season several years. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.
He played his entire 19-year career with the Cubs, hitting a total of 512 home runs. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977 and his uniform number 14 was retired in 1982. A two-time MVP, there’s a reason his nickname is Mr. Cub.
